We were taking turns naming toys we could act out in class the other day. The kids came up with dump trucks, trains, ducks, and…..hectagons! Here’s how the conversation went:

Me: “”Which toy did you pick?”

Student: “It has 100 sides”

Me: “What has 100 sides…a ball?”

Student: “A hectagon!”

It took me so off guard I had to think for a moment…hectagon…hectagon. That is the right name for a 100 sided figure! Ha! So we explored making the number 100 with our bodies.

When it was the next friends turn, she picked an octagon–a new trend was started. We tried different ways to make the number 8 by our selves, which we discovered makes us look like snowmen =) Then we tried making the number 8 shape with a partner and then in groups of 4.

A few things ran through my mind while were finding our number shapes.

1) Kids are awesome and I’m constantly surprised and delighted by how their minds work.

2) I’m so grateful to be a dance teacher.

3) How cool would it be to be an artist in residency at a school and work with teachers to incorporate movement activities, like making numbers with our bodies, into their regular classroom studies??! Ahh, daydreams.

Have you ever collaborated with a classroom teacher to create moveable lessons? What was your experience like?
